To
hopefully make it easier to search amongst the many different types of R.N. WW11
Convoy Escort ships that were produced, and used during the war years,
I have
taken the opportunity to split the original "section 17" into three parts.
I have now been
given an extremely large collection of these ships photo's to display, by a donor who wishes
to remain anonymous.
This
particular sub-section ( 17a ) contains the Escort classes known to the R.N. as "Flower
Class Corvettes",
whilst the
next sub-section ( 17b ) contains the later "Castle Class Corvettes".
The original part of "section 17"
now contains the larger ships that had later
been re-classified by the
RN as "Frigates",
as opposed to the more commonly used classification
by the rest of the World
of "Destroyer - Escort".
These quite diminutive but, for all that, quite powerfully armed little ships, and the A.S.W. trawlers found in "section 2"
of this website,
often comprised
the only "Anti - Submarine Escort" a trans-Atlantic convoy had.
This was especially so, during the first 3 years
or so of WW11, before the USA was inevitably drawn into the "Atlantic War",
that Gt. Britain was able to stand alone against the threat of
the U-boat "Wolf Packs".
